Set up by Tom Housden in 2011, Hand & Eye design studio was borne out of the desire to reacquaint designer and maker. A practising architect, Tom came to feel that the profession’s approach to design was too hands-off and very remote from the process of manufacturing.
Tom feels this denied the organic process of design. Just as we don’t expect a chef to write a recipe without experimenting with the flavours of the dish; equally we shouldn’t expect a designer to be separated from the physical process of making. The relationship between the designer and the physical object allows for subtle judgements in shape, space, texture and colour that could otherwise be missed. Perhaps more importantly, it allows for experimentation and accidental finds. It’s this that underpins Hand & Eye’s fundamental philosophy.
At this early stage Hand & Eye has set up a small studio and workshop, where projects are developed from drawing stage right through to the making and manufacturing process. The studio has also established a diverse range of collaborators and workshops around the UK and Europe.
Our hope is to grow slowly and to develop long-lasting projects for future generations to enjoy.
